Common Problems with Sinks

You soon realize how important a kitchen sink is once it doesn’t work. The sink can often be taken for granted, but without this important fixture, a normal, quick routine can become impossible. To fix a faulty sink, you should know the common problems in order to quickly identify and resolve the issue. There are a variety of brands out there that you might have, including a Kohler sink, a Bradley wash station, or a Blanco bar sink; however, despite differences, all can experience these common problems.

Clogged

One common problem is a clogged sink, which can happen in the drain or in the faucet. If water is accumulating in the drain basket, the drain is likely clogged due to a buildup of food or debris. This can lead to bad smells, bugs, and an unusable sink.

If the water pressure from your faucet has slowed down, your faucet could be clogged. This is likely if your water is very hard, or if you haven’t used the sink in a while. The easiest way to check is by unscrewing the end of the faucet(the aerator) and pulling out the strainer.

Leaking

A sink can leak either underneath or from the faucet. If you find water underneath your sink, this is likely due to a leaking drain basket, which can be fixed by properly sealing the connection or even replacing the parts.

A leaking faucet could be due to the handle not being turned all the way off. If your faucet continues to drip, however, there may be a problem with a part of the faucet, and it may have to be taken apart.

Broken Garbage Disposal

A broken garbage disposal can lead to an accumulation of water and an awful smell. The first thing to try is resetting the disposal by pushing the button on the underside of it. However, if that doesn’t work, the garbage disposal might need to be replaced.

Recognizing the problem when your sink is acting up will lead you one step closer to the solution. You can fix many of these problems yourself, but there are professionals out there that can help you if you get stuck.
